Botox has often been misconstrued in media and entertainment with botched surgeries and expressionless dolls. On the other hand, you also know the wonderful side of botox as well, the kind that removes your fine lines and wrinkles, making you look 10 years younger. Both of these are possible outcomes of botox, but you need to know the ins and outs before you make your decision.
Botox is a non-surgical procedure, so it is not as dire as any other surgery. There are not a whole lot of requirements to be eligible for botox. One of the main reasons your doctor might recommend it is if you have very defined fine lines or wrinkles in the general areas that can be corrected. Lines and wrinkles around the mouth, eyes and forehead are the most common places where botox is most effective.
You also have to keep in mind that Botox is not a permanent fix, it blocks neurotransmitters, and you have to get the treatment again over time. But as long as you have generally good health and no pre-existing skin conditions, you are a good candidate to get Botox.
The first thing you undoubtedly need to do before getting botox is to consult with a doctor. They will give you a real and honest opinion on which areas you need it in and come up with a customized plan for you. An additional point you should note is there can be some bruising, and it takes time for it to completely heal and see the full effects, so giving it some time would be the best. There are also certain foods and medicines to avoid eating before the procedure, things like fish oil, aspirin and multivitamins should be avoided if you don’t want to look worn out.
Although Botox is usually only recommended for lines and wrinkles on the face, you may be surprised to see all the places on your face where Botox can be used.
When we talk about the upper side of the face, we mean any lines or wrinkles above the eyes.
So this will include the frown lines that are formed between the eyebrows due to furrowed brows. The upper face also contains your forehead lines; these are really common with elders and are lines straight across your forehead. Lastly, let’s talk about the bunny lines. The name sounds cute in theory, but in reality these lines run from the top of the nose to the eyelids and are most definitely an unwelcome guest.
The lines around the eyes are fairly obvious and very well known, crows feet, and under-eye bags are common to most people, and all it takes is a little botox to get rid of them.
The lower face is concerned with lines around the lips, wonderfully called smokers lines and smile lines, but that’s not all; the botox in the lower half also prevents chin dimples, and jawline botox prevents grinding of the teeth.
So you have decided to get botox, but you can’t be cooped up in your house for months waiting for it to heal or more importantly, you can’t get a lot of time off work? So how long will it take?
Well, the answer to this depends upon you. The procedure itself takes 15 min and you can even get it done on a lunch break. For most, the results can be seen in the first 2-3 days after Botox treatment. You will be able to notice the reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, but that may be hard to see due to some redness and inflammation.
That is why a general time frame is 1-2 weeks, by this time all the swelling and bruising is essentially gone. You can then clearly see the results on your face. After a couple of months perhaps 2 or 3, the botox will fade, the lines will reappear, the wrinkles back to their previous state, and that is when you would want to consider going back for another round.
If you are still on the fence and considering if botox is a good idea, you might be wondering this question. Why is botox so great? Why should you get it?
You may not know this, but botox does not only have cosmetic benefits, not everyone who gets botox does it so they can look pretty or younger. Botox can help treat some serious problems for patients as well.
Some of the conditions botox can help are:
Don’t get confused; this is not an eyebrow lift. This relaxes the brow muscles, so the person looks less tired and unhappy.
Botox can stop the muscle from producing excessive sweat by acting as a shield from the brain to the muscle.
While botox can’t help the migraine itself, it can help ease some of the pain by reducing symptoms like nausea and sensitivity to light.
Eye twitches are caused mostly by spastic muscles; botox relaxes that muscle, which can stop the twitch or squint indefinitely.
Okay, let’s suppose you’ve consulted with your doctor, took all the precautions and gotten the treatment done. Now what? There are some things that you will have to be vigilant with, especially in the first 24 hours after the procedure.
First and foremost, avoid touching your face. This should be avoided either way because it transfers germs. But especially after the procedure cause, there is a slight chance you may shift the botox to a different place on the face.
Secondly, don’t do any physical activities. You don’t want to get botox and play sports and get a football to your face. Or fall face-first on the pavement while running. Just avoiding it for a day would be the best option until the botox settles in.
No one is telling you not to sleep after botox, but try no to sleep for at least 4 hours after the treatment, rest up before the day, so you don’t need a nap. Botox is injected in a vertical alignment and you may run a risk of shifting it from one place to another if you don’t take care. Also remember after the 4 hours, when you do sleep, sleep on your back and not your stomach. The face shouldn’t be squished by your pillow.
Botox isn’t as scary of a thought anymore. It’s not dangerous, and it’s not just to look beautiful. A lot of problems can be helped with a little bit of botox, and if you end up not liking it, it’ll fade in 3 months anyway, so it’s definitely worth the shot.
