Botox may help ease ‘burning mouth’ syndrome

Botox, long used to smooth wrinkles, may come to the rescue for people with a painful condition called burning mouth syndrome.

A new study finds that Botox (botulinum toxin) “might be an effective, long-lasting, and safe treatment” for the disorder, says a team of Italian researchers.

Certain medical conditions, such as allergies, thyroid issues or drug side effects, can cause burning mouth syndrome. But in many cases, the condition is caused “by damage to the nerves that control pain and taste,” the institute said.

Now, a team led by Dr. Domenico Restivo, of Garibaldi Hospital in Catania, says Botox might help ease the condition.

The small study involved three women and one man, all in their 60s or 70s. All had endured burning mouth syndrome on their tongue and lower lip for at least six months. Each received a total dose of 16 Botox injections into the tongue and lower lip.

“In all patients, pain disappeared within 48 hours,” Restivo’s group reported. “The beneficial effects lasted up to 16 weeks after injection in all but one patient, in whom they lasted up to 20 weeks.”

In a separate experiment, two additional patients received “sham” treatments — saline injections — and saw no improvement in their symptoms, effectively ruling out a “placebo” effect, the researchers said.

No side effects from the treatment were noted, and the results warrant a larger, randomized trial, the team added.

The study appeared in April in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

What exactly is Botox and how does it work?

Our faces tell the story of our lives – how much fun we’ve had, how much sun we’ve had, how much stress we’ve been exposed to and how many years we’ve been on the planet. General everyday life eventually takes its toll on our face, along with our natural aging processes which cause the collagen and elastin that keeps our skin lovely and plump and line free, to break down. Gradually, all those little lines and wrinkles develop and we long to have our youthful, smooth skin back.

But, help is at (a very steady) hand! If you’d like to smooth out your fine lines and wrinkles, and turn back the clock a few years, then Botox is for you. Botox injections are now a standard beauty treatment and are administered quickly and easily, with immediate effects. No longer do you have to live with laughter lines, crow’s feet or forehead wrinkles…

Botox is a non-invasive injectable, used to weaken the nerve signals to specific facial muscles, causing them to relax. This results in a smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles, leading to a more youthful appearance. It can also help to prevent further lines and wrinkles from developing. Depending on how much is used, and your skin type, the effects will normally last between three to four months.

The needle is tiny, and although it’s not completely pain-free, it’s not as painful as you might think. You might feel a little bruised and swollen for a few days afterwards but you’ll be left feeling, and looking refreshed, revitalized and youthful.

When used responsibly, by a registered medical practitioner or beauty salon with properly trained staff (just like us), Botox has wonderful results. Natural looking and gentle, you don’t have to worry about the ‘frozen’ look. We’ll never administer Botox without a proper consultation first, so that you get the exact look you’re after.

If you have deeper lines and wrinkles, or you’d like to plump up hollows or sunken cheeks, then dermal fillers are for you, instead of Botox. Contact us to find out more, and to book your Botox or fillers consultation.

Rejuvenate your skin, whatever your skin tone, with eMatrix

How does beautiful skin rejuvenation, without the lasers sound? Good? Impossible? Well, yes, it’s good, and yes,its possible without lasers! We’re top of our game when it comes to being at the forefront of beauty technology, techniques and products. And we’re so excited to be able to treat all skin tones now, with eMatrix.

eMatrix is a non-laser skin rejuvenation treatment which achieves very similar results to laser skin rejuvenation. If you have olive, Asian or black skin, then you’ve probably been told in the past that laser treatments aren’t for you.

Using a laser on skin with more melanin (the component in our skin that gives us our colouring, the more melanin, the darker the skin) can result in patchy, darker areas called hyper-pigmentation. This is because higher levels of melanin absorb light from the laser more quickly and the treatment therefore needs to be more intense, leaving these areas of hyperpigmentation behind.

eMatrix uses radio frequency waves instead of lasers, in a process called sublative rejuvenation. The radio frequency waves are fired in pulses at the skin which causes collagen to be regenerated. Collagen is responsible for plumping up our skin. When we age, collagen levels reduce, causing wrinkles and fine lines. Imagine collagen as a framework. Once that framework starts to breakdown, the skin laying on top of it will start to dimple and wrinkle. Regenerating collagen results in plumper, younger looking skin.

Radio frequency waves are not absorbed by melanin. Plus, during an eMatrix session, the radio frequency waves go deep into the skin, below where the melanin sits. Therefore, it’s safe for all skin tones.

If you have wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, acne scarring, enlarged pores or a dull skin tone, then eMatrix sublative rejuvenation is for you.

You’ll have full control too. Choose the intensity of the treatment depending on your skin and the results you want to achieve. We’ll use a numbing cream beforehand, so you’ll only feel some mild pain, similar to an elastic band being flicked onto your skin. Your session will only last around 20 minutes. You’ll have some slight swelling and redness for a few days afterwards and you’ll experience some mild ‘scabbing’. You might want to avoid seeing people for a few days, but once the redness, scabbing and swelling go down, you’ll be eager to show off your fabulous, youthful skin!

Book your eMatrix with us today and never look back.

Choose dermal fillers to plump, enhance and fill deep lines and wrinkles

As we get older, it becomes more difficult to disguise our age. Going from being able to easily lie about our age, to looking our age can take some getting used to. And aging, coupled with the fact our lifestyle (smoking, sun exposure, stress, pollution etc.) gradually leaves it’s trace on our faces, it’s unavoidable. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. For fine lines and wrinkles just starting to appear, there’s Botox. And for those deeper lines, and areas that have begun to hollow, there’s dermal fillers.

Usually made with collagen, dermal fillers are excellent at producing amazing, youthful results. The aging process means that the collagen and elastin in our skin breaks down. These form the ‘scaffolding’ that our skin sits on, and when this support network begins to weaken, it takes our skin with it. Hello deep nose to mouth lines, hollowed cheeks and sunken jowls. Therefore, a little help from what we already naturally had, just in an injection, goes a long way!

You can also choose to enhance areas such as the lips, adding volume for a fuller, fresher look.

This non-surgical way of adding volume and smoothing the skin is extremely popular and if carried out in properly licenced premises (like ours), is also extremely safe. Our staff are fully trained in the biology and science of the skin, muscles and nerves of the face and understand how to get the very look you’re after.

We decide on which filler to use, depending on your skin and where you’d like treatment. The needles used are very small and although you will feel some discomfort, it’s nothing to be fearful of. Dermal fillers are injected just under the skin, to fill areas that you’d like plumping. We only use small amounts, and we massage it into the area so that it settles naturally. For a couple of days, you might have some swelling and bruising but this is normal and will settle down. The results will last between six months to two years, leaving you with a fresh, natural and youthful look that no one will think is unnatural.

Fractional laser treatments for your most amazing skin!

As we age, our skin inevitably becomes less toned and wrinkles start to form. It happens to all of us. But that doesn’t mean that we have to put up with this unavoidable aspect of the ageing process!

With fractional laser, we can turn back the clock and give you that plump, youthful, fresh look that you used to have. Your skin will be rejuvenated and the texture and tone will be enhanced. Fine lines, mild wrinkles and areas of pigmentation will all be improved.

What is fractional laser?

Fractional laser is a ‘non-ablative’ laser skin treatment. Non-ablative laser treatments work by heating up the underlying layers of skin tissue to treat skin damaged by not only ageing, but sun damage and the effects of stress, pollution and lack of sleep.

Conversely, an‘ablative’ laser treatment uses laser to remove the top few layers of skin. It’s generally more invasive and requires a couple of weeks off work to recover. Although after an ablative laser treatment, skin will ooze and scab, it has a dramatic, immediate effect on deeper wrinkles and scarring.

What’s the recovery time for fractional laser?

Non-ablative fractional laser is different. You’ll experience no oozing or scabbing and you’ll be able to go straight back to your normal daily routine afterwards. Although we would certainly say yes to an afternoon of relaxation afterwards if you fancy it! You’ll have some mild swelling and redness but nothing dramatic.

Fractional laser treatments target damaged areas of skin directly, leaving the surrounding tissues unaffected. This allows for a quicker recovery time. It encourages new skin cells to grow, removes dead skin cells and tightens the layers of skin. It boosts the production of collagen, causing skin to plumper, filling the hollows and tightening up the sagging that can form over time.

You’ll notice the effects straight away. Your skin will be brighter, softer and smoother. Your skin will also improve over time as it continues to rejuvenate, and it will improve even more with each treatment. Our expert therapists will advise how many treatments you’ll need, depending on your skin tone and texture to begin with.

What does it feel like?

Your therapist will pass a laser head over the treatment area, and you’ll feel a mild prickling or slight burning during the session that will last around half an hour. We use an anesthetic cream beforehand to keep any discomfort to a minimum.

Fabulous, professional and long lasting gel nails

In today’s busy world, we often don’t have time to fit everything into our day that we’d like to. Sometimes, things have to take a back seat that really, we’d like to make time for. And this is why so many of us are choosing gel manicures to take the hassle out of making our nails look, and feel, good.

Gel nails are long lasting, often staying fresh for three or four weeks, and make nails gloriously strong underneath. No longer do you have to either have a manicure or paint your own nails each week!

At our salon, our qualified and experienced nail technicians are experts in using Shellac, Gelish and Bio Seaweed Gel nail products. We all have our favorites and whichever yours is, you’ll be super happy with the results. Each brand comes in a huge range of colors too, and we stock them all so you’ll be truly spoilt for choice.

Shellac

Shellac is a form of gel nail, that is ‘fixed’ with UV or LED light to make it last longer than traditional nail polish. Your therapist will apply it just like a normal manicure, with a base coat, two layers of color and a top coat. Between each coat, you’ll place your hands in a light box for a moment to fix the varnish. You’ll end up with a gorgeously glossy finish and a super color that won’t fade. We advise that you return to our salon to have your Shellac nails professionally removed after a few weeks. Don’t be tempted to peel off the Shellac, as this will damage the nail, no matter how appealing that is!

Gelish

Gelish is similar to Shellac and has a huge range of colors. Our therapists are knowledgeable in all our nail products and apply each one to get the best from it. Again, we advise having your Gelish nails soaked off professionally at our salon to minimize damage to your nails. Your Gelish nails are applied in the same way as Shellac and will remain chip free for up to three weeks.

Bio Seaweed Gel

Bio Seaweed Gel is a nail gel with a difference. It has the same staying power, glossy shine and range of gorgeous colors as Shellac and Gelish, but is free from strong chemicals and solvents such as formaldehyde and toluene. They won’t damage your nails at all and can be soaked off in a super quick five minutes. Bio Seaweed Gel can even be used to create overlays (similar to a false nail but using polish instead of plastic nails) and sculptured extensions for beautifully natural looking longer nails.

Whichever product you choose, you can expect an expert, professional and friendly service. Book your gel nails in today!

Remove your unwanted tattoos safely and effectively

Gone are the days when you either had to put up with a tattoo you didn’t like, or you had to have it covered up. With the advent of laser treatments in the beauty industry, you can now have unwanted tattoos laser removed.

We offer safe and regulated laser tattoo removal, carried out by trained professionals. Depending on the size, colour and density of your tattoo, we’ll be able to give you a realistic idea of how long it might take and what kind of results you can expect.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

During each session, the energy from the laser passes through your skin directly into the ink of the tattoo. This is totally harmless. The light from the laser breaks up the ink which your body then absorbs and eliminates through natural waste processes.

Does it hurt?

There’s no sugar coating it, yes it does. Everybody has a different pain threshold and some feel more pain than others. The pain has been described as like being constantly flicked with rubber bands or having lots and lots of continuous pin pricks. We’ll do our best to minimize your pain and our lasers have cool air blowing from them to help. And you can stop as many times and as frequently as you like.

Most tattoos require a few treatments to achieve the optimal result, and we advise you to have these about six to ten weeks apart. You’ll notice a difference after your first session and your tattoo will fade more and more with each session.

Before you have laser tattoo removal, we’ll talk through the whole process with you and answer any questions you have throughout. You might decide that you just want to fade your tattoo enough so that you’re able to cover it up with another one. We can help you achieve what you want to achieve.

If you’re considering laser tattoo removal, then arrange a chat with us. We’ll make you feel at ease and you could be on your way to being free of the tattoos you no longer want to be part of you.

Get the eyebrows of your dreams with microblading

Have you’ve grown tired of waking up sans eyebrows? Do you spend a fortune on eyebrow pencils, powders and brushes and squander hours on defiantly drawing them on each day? Don’t be a slave to the eyebrow pencil! Give in to the daily dedication! Check out microblading, the latest in the war against non-existent, non-conformist eyebrows.

Microblading is a form of semi-permanent makeup, that is ‘tattooed’ on, but more on the actual process in a few paragraphs…

We’ve come a long way in semi-permanent makeup since the early days. Today, it’s a much more delicate affair, with much more natural results. In fact, microblading is also rather beautifully known as ‘eyebrow embroidery’.

Our eyebrows are important. They define our look and give our face a frame. It’s little wonder so many of us deem making them perfect, so important.

So, onto the process. I say ‘tattooed’ in inverted commas, because the actual tool used is less tattoo needle, more extremely fine, scalpel-like blade. Which sounds terrifying, but really, it isn’t. We use a numbing cream beforehand, and all you’ll feel is a mild ‘scraping’ or dragging feeling.

The initial result will appear slightly darker than you expected, so don’t be alarmed. Over a week or so, the ‘tattoo’ will form a scab as it heals. Once this falls off (don’t pick it!) the colour will be the perfect shade that you chose. And the final effect isn’t like the ‘coloured in’ eyebrow of yesteryear. Instead expect super-fine lines that have the appearance of actual hairs, in the perfect shape, and colour, for your face and skin tone.

The ink isn’t added as deep below the skin as a traditional tattoo, meaning that it does eventually fade but not for 12-18 months. Which is a good thing, because as we age, our face changes shape, and therefore, so should our eyebrows. You can have them topped up every six months or so.

Our microblading specialists are passionate about giving you the eyebrows you deserve. So contact us today, and ditch all that eyebrow time and effort. Wake up fully eyebrow-ed every day!

PRP – the anti-aging facial everyone is talking about!

We’ve all seen the pictures of our favourite sister, Kim K, after her so-called vampire facial. We were shocked at how red her face was, but secretly we all wondered deep down how it felt and we were wowed by the results.

And now the vampire, or Dracula, facial is available to all of us. Officially known as the PRP facial, or Platelet Rich Plasma facial, the technology comes from the medical world. PRP therapy was originally used in heart surgery and to treat burns victims, so despite it being fairly new in the beauty industry, it’s a well-researched method. It’s also used to help athletes recover from injury. Tennis ace Rafael Nadal is said to have had PRP treatment for an injured knee.

So, what exactly is PRP?

Plasma is a component of our blood, and it is rich in platelets which are responsible for blood clotting. Plasma is also a rich source of growth factors, which along with platelets, allow our natural healing processes to occur.

And how does PRP work?

When you come into our salon, our qualified experts will take a sample of your blood, just like you’d have at your doctor’s office. We’ll then spin the sample down in a centrifuge for a few minutes. This spinning separates all the components of the blood so that we can remove the fluid part, which is the enriched plasma and concentrated platelets.

We then reintroduce this PRP into your skin, using a small, sterilized needle. We’ll concentrate on areas of fine lines and deeper wrinkles. We don’t go very deep, only a few layers and although you’ll feel some mild discomfort, it’s well worth it! The whole treatment will last around 30-45 minutes and it can be performed on any skin type.

Afterwards, you’ll have some slight bruising and swelling, as you’d expect. You might see some small scratches form too, but everything will settle down within a few days. We advise that you relax at home on the day of your treatment if you feel you need to, but then you’re free to go about your normal life. And because we’ve used your own plasma, there’s no risk of an allergic reaction.

It’s recommended that you have three sessions, four weeks apart, then one a year as to maintain your gorgeous young looking new skin.
Your skin will be gorgeous and rejuvenated and you’ll feel a million dollars. Book your PRP facial with us today!
